The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reiterated its zero tolerance on extortion and other forms of corrupt practices from its personnel.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed made the disclosure in Abakaliki during a sensitisation programme on indiscipline, reinforcement and strengthning of command and control in field commands.

Mohammed represented by Assistant Corp Marshal Godwin Omiko, said that such malpractices are not tolerated by the corps whether on the roads or offices.

“We have been inundated with calls of operational.misconduct by our personnel and we do not take such lightly.

“We have investigated many cases and those that are culpable have been shown the exit.”

He noted that curbing such negative practices warranted the sensitisation across the sector commands of the corps as it upholds professionalism among other core values.

“We are sensitising the personnel to uphold core values that distinguishes us from others.

“Two persons are involved in the extortion process: the giver and taker and we appeal to the public to refrain from offering inducements to our personnel on the roads.

“The personnel are being put to risk with such acts because any one caught by our patrol team would have him or herself to blame.’

Mohammed reminded the personnel that the corps was created to enforce traffic laws and ultimately save lives.

“Our authority flows directly from from public trust and once such is compromised, our effectiveness is compromised.

“This is why the present exercise is a corrective measure, not a witch-hunt but an opportunity for re-orientation, reinforcement and renewal.

“The corps will continue motivating staff for enhanced productivity through improved welfare packages, sustained staff promotion, housing and health incentives among others.

The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ebonyi, Daniel Asanya, welcomed the corps marshal to the command, noting that it was a rare honour to have him in their midst.

Asanya noted that despite the perceived increase in indiscipline across the nation, the Ebonyi sector command and its component units have exhibited a relative high level of discipline and professionalism.

“This is not unconnected with the constant reminder of the corps ethics and supervision by the sector Commander.

“This however, does not completely rule out few cases of misconduct but with concerted efforts, they are handled adequately.”

Lectures were offered to the personnel at the programme as they pledged to continue upholding the corps core values.
