Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from his position, effective immediately, citing health reasons.
This was contained in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the Presidential spokesman on Monday.
The resignation letter dated December 1, 2025, comes just hours after a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Tinubu has accepted Badaru’s resignation and expressed appreciation for his dedicated service to the nation.
It said that the President is expected to nominate a successor later in the week, pending Senate confirmation.
The resignation follows a series of security challenges in the North, including abductions and attacks on worshippers and schoolchildren.
Security agencies are intensifying counter-terrorism and anti-kidnapping operations across the region.
Gen. Musa’s meeting with President Tinubu, is his first public encounter since his retirement on October 24, 2025, and it is believed to focused on addressing the country’s security challenges.
