Gov.Nyesom Wike of Rivers has announced a cash prize of $20,000 to each player of the Rivers United Football Club over their victory at the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) competition.
Wike said this while receiving the players and their officials on Thursday in Port Harcourt.
The governor also rewarded the players, their coach and the management of the club with the `Governor Medal Service Award’ and a two weeks visit to Madrid, Spain for their hard work during the competition.
Wike also directed Chris Green, the Commissioner for Sports in the state to ensure that plans were in place for the two weeks of training in Spain.
The governor urged the players to be physically and Psychologically prepared to win the Confederation of African Football (CAF) competition next season.
Earlier, Green had said that the team won the league in style and broke records in their victory.
Green attributed the victory to the governor for his support, while he commended the coach and the goalkeeper for their efforts.
Similarly, Stanley Eguma, the team coach explained that the club’s victory was not achieved on a platter of gold.
He commended the governor for his unrelenting support of the club and assured him of their preparedness to dominate the African continent in the next season.
Furthermore, Festus Austin, the Captain of the club thanked Wike for his support.
Austin gave the governor an assurance that the club would make him proud, the state and Nigeria during the CAF competition the next season.
