A member of the House of Representatives, Prof. Oby Orogbu (LP- Anambra), representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency,
said women possess the capacity to deliver good governance and deliver dividends of democracy in the country.

Orogbu made the assertion on Friday, during an empowerment programme for 500 widows in her constituency tagged ‘Ego Afia’, to mark her birthday.

She called for more women in the nation’s legislative process.

According to her, tthere are currently only four female senators and 14 female members of the House of Representatives, which is very low.

She said such low participation could undermine women’s role in policymaking and socio-economic development of the country.

“Women are not just voters or supporters; they are leaders, policy-makers and agents of positive change.

“They also have the capacity to deliver the required dividend of democracy.

“If we must achieve meaningful development and social equity, women must be fully involved in politics and the legislative process,” she said.

Orogbu said the widows’ empowerment initiative was to foster economic self-reliance, alleviate poverty and support community development.

She highlighted some the projects she has completed across the constituency and appreciated her constituents for their support.

She reaffirmed her commitment to enhancing the welfare of citizens, pledging more interventions in the various communities.

Some beneficiaries, who spoke newsmen, appreciated the lawmaker for the cash support.

Mrs Chiamaka Ezennwa, a widow from Urum community, said the financial support would help her grow her business and cater for her children

Another widow from Ebenebe community, Mrs Judith Akaorah, said the funds would cushion the effect of the current economic hardships.
