Abuja, Aug. 4, 2023: The Niger military has declared that it has terminated the responsibilities of its ambassadors in Nigeria, the United States, France, and Togo.

General and former commander of the presidential guard Abdourahamane Tiani deposed democratically elected leader Mohamed Bazoum and proclaimed himself the new leader of Niger.

Tiani said that the choice was made to free Niger from “bad governance” and escalating insecurity.

In a statement that broadcast on national television on Thursday, the junta said it had “put an end” to the role of the Republic of Niger’s special ambassadors and plenipotentiaries in four nations.

Among the ambassadors are Limon Tingiri Mohamadou Tiari, Niger’s ambassador to the United States, Alad Magaskia, Niger’s ambassador to the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sidi Zakari, and Niger’s ambassador to the French Republic, Aishatou Boulamakane.

Numerous nations and organizations have urged the military to bring Bazoum back, but they have all been disregarded.

In an emergency meeting on Sunday, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), chaired by President Bola Tinubu, decided to impose severe sanctions on Niger as a result of the coup.

The coup plotters were also given a one-week deadline by ECOWAS to cede control to the legitimately elected administration.

A commission team that was led by former military head of state Abdulsalami Abubakar visited Niger on Thursday to have talks with the government there.

Alieu Touray, the head of the ECOWAS commission, and Muhammadu Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, were in attendance with Abdulsalami.

However, it was claimed that the delegation solely spoke with junta representatives.
