Lagos, Aug. 9, 2023: MTV has unveiled the highly-anticipated nominations for the 2023 “VMAs”, which recognises artists that have made significant impact in the music industry and global conversations over the past year. 

Taylor Swift (8) leads this year’s nominations, aiming for another “Video of the Year” win after her record-breaking triumph last year, making her the sole artist to achieve this feat in the highly covered category.

She is closely followed by SZA (6), Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo and Sam Smith each have 5 nominations, and BLACKPINK, Diddy and Shakira who are recognised with 4 nominations each.

This year boasts a record number of first-ever “VMAs” nominees (35 total), with multiple nominations for first-timers Kim Petras (5), Metro Boomin and Rema (3 each), Ayra Starr, GloRilla, Ice SpicePeso Pluma, Reneé Rapp and Yung Miami (2 each).

Other artists receiving first-time nods include Aespaboygenius, Burna Boy, Davido, Eslabon Armado, FLETCHER, FIFTY FIFTY, JVKE, Lauren Spencer Smith, Musa Keys, PinkPantheress, Saucy Santana, Stephen Sanchez and Toosii, among others.

Speaking on the nominations, Monde Twala, the Senior Vice President and General Manager for Paramount Africa and Lead for BET International expressed,“I am thrilled to see such a diverse and talented group of artists recognized in this year’s VMAs nominations.

These nominations reflect the incredible impact these musicians have had on the global music landscape over the past year.

The 2023 VMAs promises to be a celebration of creativity, innovation, and cultural influence”.

Starting today, fans have the opportunity to cast their votes across 15 gender-neutral categories, including the newly introduced “Best Afrobeats” category, as well as the coveted “Video of the Year,” presented by Burger King® and “Artist of the Year” categories, by visiting vote .mtv.com through Friday, September Voting for “Best New Artist” will remain open until the show on Tuesday, September 12th.

Nominations for social categories such as “Group of the Year” and “Song of Summer” will be announced later.

The 2023 “VMAs” are set to  return on Wednesday, 13 September, at 1:00 am WAT on MTV Base DSTV Channel 322 and MTV DStv Channel 130 with headline-generating surprises, one-time-only performances, and fan-filled audience LIVE from New Jersey’s famed Prudential Center
