Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, on their 2-1 victory over Japan to win their first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.

Atiku, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, described the victory as a historic achievement and a moment of national pride.

In a congratulatory message, he praised team captain Harmony Chidi, her teammates, head coach Akeem Busari and the entire technical and support staff for their contribution to the triumph.

The former vice-president said Chidi had spoken about her dream of making her teammates and the country proud, adding that the achievement had become a source of joy for Nigerians.

“Tonight, that dream belongs to every Nigerian,” Atiku said.

He noted that the Flamingos had demonstrated the potential of Nigerian talent when young people receive the necessary support and opportunities to excel.

Atiku, however, said the team’s achievement should inspire more Nigerian girls to pursue their ambitions with confidence and courage.

He thanked the players for giving the country a moment of joy and unity, describing their performance as an achievement Nigerians could celebrate with pride.
