The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) says that its civil defence community is key to actualising the mandate of safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure.
The Commandant General of the corps, Dr Abubakar Audi, made the assertion on Thursday in Abakaliki during the maiden security summit, organised by the Ebonyi command of the corps.
Audi, represented by the corps’ Deputy Commandant General in charge of Operations, Philip Ayuba, said the civil defence community will strengthen measures and forster collaboration to actualise set security objectives.
“The civil defence community is significant as it underscores the corps’ critical roles in enhancing security using an inclusive approach.
“Community relation is critical as it helps build trust, credibility and loyalty with the communities.
“Strong community relation builds positive reputation in communities and is the vehicle to convey desired goals of effective security.”
He lauded the Ebonyi command’s initiative, noting that it could become a model to be adopted nationally.
“This is due to its dynamics in solving multi-dimensional security issues.
“We hope that when internalised, it will help check crimes such as armed robbery, illegal mining, vandalism, and ritual killings, among others.
“I therefore urge relevant stakeholders to identify with the initiative, not to undermine their endeavours or discredit their communities.”
The State Commandant of the corps, Francis Nnadi, said the security summit will witness induction of new members into the civil defence community.
“The event marked a new chapter in our efforts to strengthen national security and build a safer, more secure society.
“We currently face complex security challenges in the society which made us form the community where security operatives and citizens meet.
“The summit is therefore an opportunity to engage, deliberate and forge new strategies to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities.”
Gov. Francis Nwifuru, represented by the Ebonyi state Commissioner for Internal Security, Mr Etta Ude, commended the NSCDC for the initiative, describing it as “apt and timely”.
“The state government will continue supporting security agencies to maintain the state’s toga of the safest in the south east zone.
“We are fulfilling all security mandates contained in the administration’s Peoples Charter of Needs mantra, to secure lives and properties.”
Nwifuru among other distinguished individuals, were bestowed with various categories of awards for their contributions to enhance security in the state.
