The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has reiterated that there are plans to revolutionise the nation’s ports with the implementation of the National Single Window project and ports modernisation system.

The Managing Director of NPA, Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists in Lagos.

Dantsoho was represented by the General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, Mr Ikechukwu Onyemakara.

He said the implementation was expected to tackle pressing issues such as port congestion and delays in cargo clearance, which had long plagued the sector.

On the electronic truck call-up system (ETO), he noted that the system was under review ahead of the expiration of its contract to improve its efficiency.

Dantsoho said the ETO system was introduced to address logistics challenges that affected Apapa residents.

He noted that the system has significantly improved port operations and addressed several issues within the logistics chain.

“After the contract expires, we will conduct a review, especially in response to complaints, to improve its performance.

“The review will be carried out by NPA in collaboration with the Truck Transit Park (TTP), after which a renewed ETO system will be introduced,” he said.

On the issue of mode of cargo evacuation, he said that the customer determines which mode to use.

“NPA started the barge operations and urged operators to make the mode attractive.

“It is the customer that will decide if they want to take their cargo by barges, NPA is there to create the environment,” he said.

According to Dantsoho, NPA is also working to improve logistics, including rail transportation from APMT terminal and alternative cargo transport options.

The NPA md expressed optimism that the agency’s vision for the ports industry would leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

He urged the media to play a proactive role in monitoring societal developments, emphasising the importance of a free and vibrant press in driving progress and accountability.

“The media has been advised to be creative and step up its role as watchdog of the society,” he said.
