Human rights lawyer and writer Dele Farotimi has been granted ₦30 million bail.

Farotimi arrived at the Ekiti Magistrate Court on Friday for a hearing of alleged defamation charges against him.

Security was heightened at the venue of the court, with operatives of the Nigerian Police and other security agencies present.

The human rights lawyer was arrested following a petition by Chief Afe Babalola (SAN).

Farotimi is accused of publishing defamatory statements in his book, “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System.” The court is set to rule on his bail application.

The charge suit, number MAD/1,476.C/2024, pits the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police as the complainant against Farotimi as the defendant.

Farotimi, a vocal critic of certain political and legal practices in Nigeria, reportedly made statements that Babalola, a prominent lawyer and educationist, found defamatory. The case highlights broader issues of freedom of speech, legal ethics, and the consequences of public discourse in Nigeria.

For specific details about the events leading to the defamation claim, including the statements made, legal arguments, and judicial proceedings, I would need more context or information. If you have specific excerpts or points from a document or news article, please share, and I can help analyze or summarize them.
