Court remands man for allegedly defiling his daughters, assaulting wife

Ikeja, Feb. 14, 2023: An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, ordered that a 35-year-old man, Femi Afolabi be remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre for allegedly defiling his three daughters and assaulting their mother.

The Magistrate, Ms Ejiro Kubeinje, who did not take Afolabi’s plea, directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

She adjourned the case until March 7 for DPP’s advice.

The police charged Afolabi who resides in Onipanu in the Illupeju area of Lagos State with two counts of defilement and assault.

The Prosecution Counsel, DSP Kehinde Ajayi, told the court that Afolabi committed the offence sometime in Dec. 2022, in his residence at Onipanu.

She said that the mother of the girls had reported that her husband defiled their daughters aged nine, eight and five.

She said that when the mother of the girls got to know, she confronted her husband who got very angry and beat her up.

Defilement attracts life imprisonment according to the provisions of Section 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2005.

Assault attracts a one-year jail term, according to the provisions of Section 172 of the law. 

Also, a 23-year-old man, Joshua Olaoye, on Tuesday appeared before an Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly stealing a cell phone worth N89,000.

Olaoye, who resides in Aboru, Lagos State, appeared on a count charge of stealing.

He, however, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Ejiro Kubeinje.

The prosecutor, DSP Kehinde Ajayi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Feb. 3 at 9 p.m. at No 67 Victor Fagbemi Road, Aboru, Lagos State.

Ajayi said that the accused trespassed into a church belonging to Pastor Jimmy Ilumomi and stole the Infinix Hot 10 Android phone kept there.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened sections 287 of the criminal law of Lagos state, 2015.

The section provides three years of imprisonment for offenders.

Kubeinje granted the accused bail in the sum of N150,000 with two sureties.

She ordered that the home and office addresses of the sureties must be verified.

The magistrate adjourned the case until March 28 for a hearing.

Similarly, a 22-year-old sales representative, Stella Christian, on Tuesday appeared before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing the sum of N1.1 million belonging to her employer.

The defendant, a resident of Barnawa, Kaduna, was charged with stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in November 2022 at High-Cost Narayi, Kaduna.

Leo said the defendant, a sales representative to one Kingsley Jide, was given the sum of N1.1 million by her boss to deposit in the bank.

The prosecutor alleged that the defendant did not remit the said money to Jide’s bank account, but instead converted it to her own use.

He said that the offence contravened Section 217 of the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted her bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case until March 29, for a hearing.
