The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Territorial Office, on Tuesday embarked on a sensitization/awareness campaign on proper waste management at Idi Araba and Makoko communities of Lagos State.

The advocacy campaign was done in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Disaster Management Unit of the Nigeria Police and NYSC Emergency Management Vanguards.

Speaking at the event, Mrs Ibitayo Adenike, Head, Search and Rescue Unit, NEMA, said that the advocacy was to complement the effort of the state government to ensure communities were resilient to flood.

The team visited the community leaders and acquainted them with efforts of the government in ensuring that their communities were free from flood.

The community leaders promised to take the advocacy to places of worship and their town hall meetings.

The advocacy team also engaged traders in the market.

Adenike advised the traders to containerise their wastes and dispose them properly by patronising LAWMA assigned PSP operators in the area.

She also told the traders to desist from dumping refuse in drainages and canals so as not to impede the flow of water.

It will be recalled the Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on July 14, flagged-off sanitation advocacy to sensistise Lagos residents on the need to take ownership of cleaning their environment.
