Mental health challenges among incarcerated persons remain one of the most under-addressed issues in Nigeria’s correctional system, where limited access to care, stigma, and low awareness have long hindered rehabilitation and reintegration.
To address these gaps, the Vcare for Development Foundation (VCDF), in partnership with the Centre for Legal Support and Inmate Rehabilitation (CELSIR) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), has launched Reform360: Reinvent, Reconnect, Reintegrate—a human-centred programme designed to strengthen mental health support and drive sustainable correctional reforms.
The initiative is supported by Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company Limited (SEEPCO).
As part of the programme, more than 100 inmates of the Ikoyi Male Medium Security Custodial Centre have completed Mental Health First Aider training.
A total of 107 certificates were issued to participants, including seven correctional officials.
Reform360 underscores mental health as a key pillar of effective rehabilitation. Beneficiaries of the programme have reported improved emotional regulation, better sleep, strengthened empathy, and renewed hope.
One participant described the experience as transformative, saying, “I almost lost hope, but this programme brought me back to life. I have been rebirthed.”
A cell elder added, “This didn’t just teach us; it softened our hearts.”
A correctional officer noted visible behavioural changes among participants, highlighting one inmate who was previously withdrawn but has now begun to bathe regularly, smile, and reconnect with others.
Reform360 promotes a practical pathway for justice-impacted individuals to reinvent themselves, reconnect with opportunities, and reintegrate into society.
With SEEPCO’s support, the programme aims to build a safer and more inclusive society by addressing mental health needs and reducing stigma to improve rehabilitation outcomes.
Beyond its immediate impact, the initiative seeks to establish sustainable support systems that enhance well-being and prepare beneficiaries for successful reintegration.
The programme directly advances the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
VCDF says it will continue to leverage SEEPCO’s partnership to champion positive public health and socio-economic outcomes that uphold human dignity. Sterling Oil reaffirmed its commitment to supporting interventions that deliver lasting impact across communities.
