Gunmen killed a yet-to-be-identified University of Benin student on Sunday night after attacking his JLK Mercedes-Benz near the main gate at Ugbowo.
How Attack Happened
Eyewitnesses said the attackers struck as the student drove out of the campus. They said masked gunmen arrived in another Mercedes-Benz without a plate number.
Furthermore, witnesses said the armed men came down with rifles and moved straight toward the victim’s vehicle. The student reportedly tried to escape by reversing, but hit another car and got trapped.
Meanwhile, sources said the victim had finished an examination in the Political Science Department about one hour before the attack.
Two Others Injured
Eyewitnesses said the student was not alone in the car. A female passenger sat in the front seat, while another male passenger sat in the back.
However, the gunmen reportedly focused their shots on the driver’s side. Bullets hit the female passenger in the stomach, while the male passenger also suffered injuries.
Consequently, the student died at the scene after multiple gunshots. Bystanders reportedly used cloth to cover the injured woman before taking her to hospital.
Police Respond
Operatives from the Ugbowo Divisional Police Headquarters later moved to the scene and evacuated the victim’s body.
In response, the Divisional Police Officer, SP Emmanuel, said details of the incident remained sketchy.
Furthermore, the Edo State Police Command has not released an official statement on the killing.
The latest attack has raised fresh concerns over safety around the University of Benin community.
Meanwhile, another student reportedly escaped on Saturday after an attacker allegedly chased him with a machete near the Social Science Lecture Theatre.
