Goods worth millions of Naira have been destroyed by fire at the Ladipo market in Mushin and the Owode Onirin Market along Ikorodu Road in Lagos State on Tuesday.

The fire caused extensive damage to a wide range of products, including electronics, generators, bicycles, vehicle spare parts, furniture, mobile phones, household appliances, and motorcycles.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, who confirmed the incident, said there was no record of injury or loss of life.

He said the agency received distress calls through its 767 and 112 emergency toll-free lines at about 00.09hrs concerning the fire outbreak.

“LASEMA immediately activated the state’s emergency response plans and response team from its Cappa Base.

“Upon arrival at 00.16hrs at the scene of the incident, it was discovered that a warehouse surrounded by shops was gutted by the fire.

“Investigations revealed that the inferno was caused by an electric power surge after public electricity power supply was restored to the area.

“Valuable goods worth a fortune were, however, destroyed by the inferno,” he said.

According to him, LASEMA, in collaboration with other emergency responders, carried out a thorough assessment of the damage and provided the warehouse occupants with guidance on essential safety precautions to mitigate the risk of similar incidents occurring in the future.

A multi-agency response team, comprising LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team, LRU Fire Fighters, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASAMBUS, Nigeria Police Force, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, Lagos State Building Control Agency, and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, collaborated to execute the response effort.
