The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria will examine the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on journalism, media integrity and press freedom at its 2026 conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Abuja.
The two-day conference, themed “Truth Under Pressure: Journalism, AI and Information Integrity,” will hold on December 2 and 3, 2026, at Bolton White Hotel, Wuse Zone 7, Abuja.
In a statement jointly signed by IPI Nigeria Deputy President, Fidelis Mbah, and Secretary, Ahmed Shekarau, the organisation said the conference would focus on emerging threats to journalism and ways to protect the credibility of news reports.
AI, Deepfakes and 2027 Elections
Meanwhile, participants will examine how AI-generated deepfakes and other forms of fake digital content threaten public trust in the media, especially as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
The conference will also explore how newsrooms can use AI-powered verification tools and transparent fact-checking methods to detect and counter misinformation.
Furthermore, the gathering will address press freedom, journalists’ safety, disinformation and the growing challenges facing the Nigerian media industry.
IPI Seeks Stronger Media-Security Collaboration
A key focus will be stronger cooperation between media organisations and security agencies.
Speaking ahead of the event, IPI Nigeria President, Musikilu Mojeed, said the conference would help journalists understand how to use AI tools to protect the accuracy and integrity of their reports.
Mr Mojeed added that participants would assess media freedom and journalists’ safety in Nigeria.
They would also discuss policy and legal reforms to strengthen independent journalism.
Furthermore, he said the conference would promote constructive engagement between the media and government on transparency and accountability.
The gathering will also provide an opportunity for journalists and media executives to share global experiences and best practices for protecting press freedom and promoting responsible journalism.
IPI Nigeria to Hold AGM on December 3
Meanwhile, the conference will feature the induction of new members into IPI Nigeria. The move will expand the organisation’s network and strengthen its efforts to defend press freedom in the country.
The second day, December 3, will focus on the organisation’s Annual General Meeting, which will bring together IPI Nigeria members.
At the AGM, members will receive and review reports from the Executive Committee, assess the organisation’s activities and strategic direction, and consider new initiatives and partnerships to improve press freedom and journalists’ safety.
Founded in 1950, IPI is a global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists across more than 100 countries.
For over seven decades, the organisation has championed press freedom and independent journalism around the world.
