APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, says the party’s ongoing primaries have run smoothly, with broad participation and strong internal engagement across Nigeria.
He made the remarks during an interview on ARISE NEWS on Monday, where he defended the credibility of the exercise and dismissed claims of manipulation.
APC Defends Primaries Process
Senator Ajibola Basiru says the All Progressives Congress (APC) has recorded a largely peaceful and inclusive primary election process.
He said members across the country actively participated in selecting candidates. He also rated the exercise highly in terms of organisation and outcomes.
However, he acknowledged that no election process is flawless. He stressed that credibility depends on substantial compliance with established rules, not perfection.
Governors, Influence, and Internal Democracy
Responding to concerns about governors dominating party structures, Basiru dismissed the claims as perception-based.
He argued that critics must provide clear evidence of where internal democracy was blocked.
Furthermore, he maintained that governors, as politicians, are entitled to preferences and can mobilise support using their influence and resources. He insisted this does not automatically amount to abuse of power.
Wike Link Allegations in Rivers APC
Basiru also addressed claims linking Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to APC candidates in Rivers State.
He rejected the allegation of direct control, saying aspirants remain independent and must pass party screening.
Meanwhile, he noted that Wike is not a member of the APC, even though political allies may operate within the party structure.
INEC Oversight and Transparency Claims
The APC National Secretary defended the centralised collation of primary election results at the party’s national headquarters.
He said the system allows complaints to be reviewed before final announcements are made.
Consequently, he argued that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) monitors the process, adding an extra layer of oversight and credibility.
Women’s Representation in APC Politics
On women’s participation, Basiru admitted that representation remains low but said improvement will come with greater empowerment and engagement.
He said Nigeria’s broader political environment still limits gender inclusion, but expressed optimism that progress will continue over time.
He added that the APC is not satisfied with current figures but remains committed to improving participation through more inclusive structures.
