Abakaliki, Nigeria – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi state council, has visited the Trinitarian Foundation for Orphans, Ugiwuachara, Abakaliki, as part of its ceremonies to mark the 2025 Press Week.
The council, during the visit on Saturday, donated food items and other materials to support the humanitarian work of the foundation.
The State NUJ Chairman, Comrade Samson Nwafor, who led the delegation, said the visit afforded the union the opportunity to render moral and material support to the needy and less-privileged in the society.
“Journalism encompasses humanitarian services which make the council prioritise charitable visitations during its annual press week.
“We pledge to publicise the humanitarian works of the foundation through media platforms in the state, to attract more public support
“When we visited this place last year, we were not happy with its condition which we could have tackled if we had the wherewithal.”
He noted that the council repeated the visit to know how the orphanage was faring and urged it to accept its little support to cushion inherent challenges.
Rev. Sister Emelesina Ani, who responded on behalf of the management, appreciated the NUJ for its overwhelming support and love.
“Most of the children under our care lost their parents and the foundation had been catering for them since.”
Ani noted that some of the children were in nursery and primary schools while others were already in secondary schools.
“We appeal that you help us create awareness for more good–spirited individuals to support in tackling the enormous challenges facing us.
“”The awareness will help a lot because people do not know that we are here.
“We do not have perimeter fencing, so the compound is always flooded whenever it rains.”
She noted that the building
no longer accommodates the children and there are no resources to build another one.
The items donated to the foundation by the NUJ include bags of rice, packets of indomie noodles, diapers, tomatoes, children’s bed and detergent among others.
