The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has stepped up its enforcement drive by serving Intention to Seal Notices on defaulting shops and sections of Oshodi Market that violated Lagos environmental sanitation laws.
LAWMA’s Project WISE team served the notices on Monday during a monitoring and compliance exercise across the market.
The agency said it acted after repeated cases of indiscriminate waste disposal, poor sanitation and failure to follow approved waste management rules.
LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the operation forms part of the agency’s ongoing effort to improve environmental compliance in major markets, business districts and commercial corridors across Lagos.
He said the affected premises received the notices after several rounds of environmental awareness campaigns, compliance meetings and monitoring failed to produce the required results.
Gbadegesin said the Intention to Seal Notices give traders and business owners another opportunity to correct the violations before the agency takes further enforcement action.
He warned that indiscriminate waste disposal, dirty surroundings and other environmental offences threaten public health, environmental sustainability and the beauty of Lagos.
He urged market associations, traders and business owners to keep their surroundings clean, use only assigned Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators and bag and dispose of waste through approved channels.
The LAWMA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to combining public education with fair but firm enforcement to promote responsible environmental behaviour, protect public infrastructure and support the Lagos State Government’s goal of building a cleaner, healthier and more liveable city.
