Man In Court Over Alleged Theft Of Items Worth N9m

A 42-year-old man, Ige Akingbade, was, on Wednesday, arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a Tug Bolt machine and jewelries worth N9 million.

Akingbade, whose address was given, is facing a four-count charge of stealing, to which he, however, pleaded not guilty.

The Prosecutor, Insp Funmi Akinleye, told the court that the defendant, with others still at large, committed the offence in January at Ayetoro area of Epe, Lagos.

She said that the defendant stole one Tug Bolt machine, valued at N4 million and gold jewelries, valued at N5 million, both totaling N9 million, property of one late Chief Kamorudeen Akingbade.

According to her, the offence is punishable under Section 287(5)(f) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The prosecutor also said that the defendant, with others at large, threatened to kill one Mrs Olabisi Akingbade, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 56(a)(b) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

“That you, Ige Akingbade and others still at large, did conduct yourselves in a manner likely to cause breach of peace.

“You disallowed one Olabisi Akingbade access to her father’s house, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 168(1)(d) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015,” the prosecutor said.

The Magistrate, Mrs O.O. Fajana, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum.

Fajana, thereafter, adjourned the case till Nov. 9 for mention.

In a related development, the police on Wednesday, arraigned a 34-year-old security guard, Habibu Raji, in a Grade 1 Area Court, Kado Abuja, for allegedly withdrawing N222,000 from his colleague’s bank account.

The defendant, who resides in Kado- Kuchi, Abuja, is standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution counsel, Helen Ochai, told the court that the complainant, Momoh Eromosele, of the Pier Restaurant, Abuja, reported the matter at the Life Camp Police Station, on Sept. 20.

The counsel further alleged that on the same date, the defendant conspired with his colleague, one Abdulaziz Amoto, currently at large, stole the ATM card of Maria Odey, their colleague.

The counsel told the court that the defendant allegedly withdrew the sum of N222,000 from Odey’s account without her consent.

Ochai added that during police investigation the defendant confessed to have committed the offence.

She said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 97 and 288 of the Penal Code Law.

The Judge, Muhammed Wakili, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.

Wakili ordered the surety, who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, to provide a print out of his bank verification number to the court’s  registrar.

He  adjourned the matter until Dec. 20 for hearing.
