The NDLEA has started a historic weapon handling training course in Jos, Plateau State, as the agency begins the formal induction of AK-47 rifles and advanced pistols into its operations after 36 years.
The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), announced the development on Monday, 29th June 2026, during the inauguration of the Train-the-Trainer Course on Weapon Handling at the NDLEA Academy in Jos.
Marwa, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Col. Murtala Aminu, said the move reflects the changing nature of the fight against drug trafficking in Nigeria.
He said drug trafficking groups have become more organised and violent, making better protection and training necessary for officers.
Marwa praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting the agency’s operational growth.

He also commended the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for providing the first major supply of firearms and ammunition to begin the training.
He revealed that the arms procurement process, which started in 2023 through China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO), has reached its final stage.
Thousands of arms and ammunition are expected to arrive soon, with plans in place for distribution and accountability across NDLEA commands.
In response to the new development, the NDLEA selected officers from different commands to become pioneer master trainers.
The officers will return to their formations to conduct a compulsory one-month training programme for personnel before the weapons enter full operational use.
Marwa urged the participants to maintain discipline, safety, professionalism and respect for the rule of law.
He said firearm handling requires responsibility and good judgement because the agency’s duty remains the protection of lives.
Marwa said the NDLEA has grown into a more professional and capable agency in recent years.
He added that the induction of the tactical arms marks a new phase of stronger security and improved operations against drug criminals.
He said the agency has recorded major seizures, disrupted criminal networks and taken action against traffickers who once operated without fear.
