Abakaliki, Nigeria – The National Open University (NOUN) has opened a special study centre at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Abakaliki, to enhance the educational wellbeing of inmates.

The study centre was renovated and donated by the foundation floated by the Member Representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency of Ebonyi, Hon Chinedu Ogah, in collaboration
with the NOUN board.

Ogah, the Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions, inaugurating the facility on Tuesday commended the collaborative efforts of stakeholders working to reform correctional facilities across Nigeria.

“I re-affirm my unwavering commitment to enhance the welfare and rehabilitation of inmates nationwide.

“I enjoin inmates to make adequate use of the facility to enhance their educational endeavours to become useful members of the society.”

He disclosed that the centre has been equipped with modern facilities with all obligations: school fees, books among other materials being completely free.

“There is a reason God brought you to this correctional center and you should use the opportunity to transform your lives to secure a bright future.

“I thank Gov. Francis Nwifuru for his commitment towards promoting education in the state as the study centre is a way of complementing his noble efforts.

“Among the enrollees, 25 enrolled in undergraduate programmes while three were admitted into masters degree programmes.

“We acknowledge the invaluable support of development partners, particularly The Mercy Foundation under the Sudan Mission, Netherlands, for their role in equipping the facility.

“I also commend to Ogah for his direct involvement in the renovation and transformation of the hall that now serves as the study centre.”

In her remarks, the National Coordinator of the NOUN Special Study Centres, Mrs. Modukwe Adesina, disclosed that over 2,000 inmates across the country have benefited from NOUN scholarships.

“More than 200 of them graduated through academic programmes completed while in custody.”

Nneka Iyasei, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Nigerian Correctional Service Ebonyi Command said in an interview that the facility will offer an educational lease to the inmates.
