He said that the NRC Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Mr Yakub Mahmood, was also honoured, and 20 other staff members were recognised for their dedication during the just-concluded presidential free train ride.

Iloanusi noted that Garkuwa was honoured with an award for integrity and exemplary display of honesty.

The acting director said the action of Garkuwa represents integrity , honesty and exemplary character which NRC staff was known for.

“Garkuwa had on Dec. 28, 2024 found the wallet inside one of the waiting rooms at the Abuja-Kaduna Train Station, Rigasa, and returned it to his superior officers.

“The wallet contained $700, some naira notes and ATM cards,” he said.

The acting managing director presented him with a certificate, a cash token as well as a gift time.

He said that Garkuwa also got recognition from the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) of the NRC as an anti-corruption ambassador while the Nigerian Union of Railway Workers (NUR) also promised to honour the staff for his exemplary conduct.

Iloanusi urged the rest members of staff of the NRC to emulate what he described as the exemplary conduct of the staff.

He stated that the recent town hall meetingwas significant as NRC just concluded its free train ride under the directives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and through the supervision of the minster of transportation and the ministry of transportation.

“So we just concluded the free train ride and we felt we needed to recognise some of the key players that contributed to the success of the free train ride and we started the year with it.

“We recognised a lot of people, up to 20 that was instrumental to the success of the free train ride. In particular, we recognised the man that found a wallet containing money.

“It showed exemplary spirit, he demonstrated a lot of transparency which is what we are about in the NRC – transparency, dignity,” he said.

Also, NRC Director of Administration and Human Resources, Dr Monsurat Omotayo said the staff including all the directors were up and doing to ensure the success of the free train ride.

“We recognised 20 people, but however, there is another category which did not have to do with train rides, this is something that has been ongoing, just to encourage staff,” he said.
