The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Wednesday, said one person died in the only fatal crash recorded in Ebonyi during the last yuletide.
The Sector Commander of the FRSC in the state, Corps Commander Daniel Asanya made the disclosure in Abakaliki during the celebration to mark the conclusion of the command’s yuletide special patrol.
Asanya said that the dead was a male adult as some non-fatal crashes were recorded in the state within the period.
“The period of the special patrol on zero tolerance to road crashes was between Dec.15 and Jan.15.
“We have to appraise our output during the period having ensured with utmost vigilance, that Ebonyi roads were safe.
“We realise that the task of keeping roads in the state safe is continuous and have to brace to the challenge.”
He identified challenges faced by motorists within the period which included obstructions caused by construction work on major roads in the state.
“Most motorists plying the Enugu–Abakaliki federal highway for instance, are not aware of construction work on the road.
“Motorists run into objects or structures used for construction and this mainly affects drivers who do not observe traffic regulations.
“The Abakaliki–Ikom–Ogoja–Cameroon trans-saharan highway witnesses indiscriminate parking by articulated vehicles and this causes accidents.”
The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Richard Idike congratulated the FRSC for a successful yuletide patrol and urged it to continue ensuring that Ebonyi roads are safe.
Idike, who is the Coordinator of the FRSC Special Marshals in Ebonyi noted that the marshals would continue contributing their quota to ensure the command achieves its mandates.
Mr Victor Onwe, a Commercial Driver commended the FRSC for its diligence in reducing crashes during the yuletide and urged it to continue the good work.
“I specifically commend the corps for its persuasive approach on drivers which has impacted positively on their conducts on Ebonyi roads,.”
Goodwill messages were delivered at the occasion by the state Controller of Corrections, Chika Igwugwu, the state Commandant of the Nigeria Security, and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Francis Nnadi among other dignatories.
