Abakaliki, Nigeria – The Trinitarian Foundation for Orphanage and Help has appealed to Gov. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi to provide immediate accommodation and mitigate the impact of floods in the premises.

Rev. Sister Nkechi Nwosu, Operator of the orphanage home, made the call on Wednesday, when officials of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) visited the Home as part of activities marking the 2024 Press Week in the state.

Nwosu said the need for more accommodation followed the increase in the population of the children at the Home.

According to her, the Home currently accommodates over 26 children and five social workers.

The operator, who described the home as a charity home for orphanages, expressed satisfaction for the support and visit of the union members.

“This place can no longer accommodate the number of children here and the ones we are supposed to help.

“We always receive requests to take in more children,” Nwosu said.

She further called on the wife of the governor, Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, to assist the home and alleviate the sufferings of the orphans and vulnerable children at the home.

Speaking during an assessment of the flood situation in the premises, Rev. Mother Mary-Agnes Onyejeli, another Operator, lamented the impact of floods on the home, saying that the premises are always flooded and the children often displaced.

Onyejeli solicited for urgent government intervention to provide lasting solution and to mitigate the effect of floods in the area.

“We plead with Gov. Nwifuru to assist us in this regard,” Onyejeli said.

Mr John Lekpa, President, Society of St. Vincent De Paul Old Peoples and Destitute Home in Abakaliki, pleaded for the home to be included in the ongoing empowerment programmes by the state government.

Lekpa commended the Union for its continuous support to the home.

Earlier, Mr Samson Nwafor, Chairman of the NUJ in the state, said that the union was identifying with the less privileged in commemoration of its press week.

The Union later presented bags of rice, detergents, cartons of tomatoes and tissue papers to the home.
