Recent remarks attributed to Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima have sparked discussions about political freedom and the rights of citizens in Nigeria.

The idea that Nigerians, including members of opposition parties like the ADC, should not be restricted in their political choices is a fundamental principle of democracy.

In any democratic society, citizens must have the right to freely choose the political party or candidate they believe in without fear, pressure, or intimidation.

Democracy thrives when people are allowed to express their opinions openly and participate actively in governance.

Forcing or influencing individuals to abandon their political beliefs undermines the very essence of democracy.

Political competition should be based on ideas, policies, and performance—not coercion. Every Nigerian deserves the freedom to support any political party of their choice.

Furthermore, respect for political diversity strengthens national unity. When citizens feel safe to associate with any political group, it encourages healthy debates, accountability, and better leadership. Suppressing opposition voices only weakens democratic institutions and limits progress.

Nigeria’s future depends on upholding democratic values such as freedom, fairness, and justice. Leaders and political actors must ensure that no citizen is denied their right to choose.

In conclusion, Nigerians are free people. They must be allowed to decide their political future without interference. Only through true freedom can democracy grow and the nation move forward.
