President Donald Trump has ordered a freeze on U.S. aid to South Africa, condemning a law that he claims “enables the government of South Africa to seize ethnic minority Afrikaners’ agricultural property without compensation.”
The law, linked to South Africa’s contentious land reform efforts, has stirred significant international debate.
Trump added that the U.S. would “promote the resettlement of Afrikaner refugees escaping government-sponsored race-based discrimination.”
Despite the South African government’s denials, Trump maintains that the law reflects ongoing race-based policies that harm the Afrikaner community.
His statements follow criticism from ally Elon Musk, who described South Africa’s laws as “openly racist.”
The decision also comes amid broader diplomatic tensions, with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accusing the South African government of an “anti-American” agenda.
