The Lagos Bus Services Ltd. (LBSL) has introduced a policy aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of its mass transit system to ensure a greener and more sustainable future.

This announcement was made by Mr. Idowu Oguntona, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LBSL, during the fifth anniversary celebration of the organization on Wednesday in Lagos.

Mr. Oguntona highlighted that the LBSL Sustainability Policy is a strategic framework aligned with the Lagos State Climate Action Plan and the Lagos State Transport Policy.

He emphasized that the policy marks a significant milestone in LBSL’s journey towards sustainability.

“By integrating environmental, social, and governance principles into every aspect of our operations, we are not only enhancing the quality of our services but also contributing to the overall well-being of Lagos State and Nigeria at large,” Oguntona said.

He noted that the transport sector is responsible for about 20% of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions, and LBSL is determined to lead by example in reducing the carbon footprint of its bus mass transit system.

The policy is driven by LBSL’s mission to provide smart and sustainable bus transportation solutions suitable for a modern city.

The organization has also introduced a state-of-the-art sick bay, reflecting its commitment to the health and well-being of its employees.

Since its inception, LBSL has achieved significant milestones, including transporting over 52 million passengers and covering more than 27 million kilometers across over 30 routes.

The LBSL driver training academy has produced over 1,862 graduates.

The organization employs a total of 850 staff, with 216 having been with the company for over five years.

Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), which regulates LBSL, commended the organization for its sustainability policy.

She praised LBSL for its achievements within five years, demonstrating the commitment of its staff.

“As your regulator, we see what you do and we can say that LBSL is the one that carries the largest number of passengers daily in Lagos.

“You are doing something right that we are proud of. Lagos residents appreciate your job. Please keep it up,” Akinajo said.

Mr. Olawale Musa, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos Ministry of Transportation, acknowledged the challenges faced by LBSL and assured that their concerns are being addressed.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, lauded LBSL’s achievements over the past five years as a testament to consistency and good leadership.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining high service levels and noted that high-capacity buses help reduce the number of cars on the road, thereby decreasing carbon emissions.

Newsmen reports that the anniversary event included the presentation of awards to 216 pioneer staff members of the organization.
