Abia State Government has banned tricycle operators from using the Umuahia–Obowo–Owerri route and ordered a stop to tricycle trips from Umuahia to Ohafia and Arochukwu.

The state government directed security agencies to arrest any tricycle operator who violates the order.

The government also ordered officials to impound tricycles used in defiance of the directive.

In a statement, Abia Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, said the measure would improve order and safety on the state’s roads.

The government urged affected operators, popularly known as Keke NAPEP, and members of the public to comply.

Ukaegbu moved to calm panic among tricycle operators in Umuahia. He said the government did not impose a total ban on tricycles across Abia State.

“Keke (tricycle) operators are not banned from operating in Abia State.

“The restriction only applies to the use of tricycles for long-distance passenger transportation to destinations such as Owerri, Obowo, Mbaise, and Arochukwu,” Ukaegbu said.
