Residents under the aegis of Lekki Residents Association (LERA) have expressed satisfaction, joy and optimism over the just concluded environmental sanitation on Saturday, describing the exercise as successful.
LERA Chairman, Mrs Shareefah Andu, said that residents in the area responded well to the exercise, saying the re-introduction was a welcome development.
“You know, today has been a very successful day. All the residents turned up, and they were able to see the result of what we did.
“It was very horrible earlier in the day; we now see the difference and it should be a thing of joy for us to see it continue, “ she said.
Andu said the association would continue to mobilise, sensitise and encourage residents to continue to maintain the sanitation.
According to her, the association will meet strategise how it can continue to carry out the sanitation in sectional phases to achieve a cleaner environment.
She said, “If we do this, like, every month for a full year, the whole environment will be different, and I am so confident about that.
“We have an environmental team; we just make sure that we are more focused and deliberate about what we have to do.
”Residents are actually interested and are buying into this great vision of the government and it is a thing of joy.”
Earlier, Mr Idris Aregbe, Special Adviser to Lagos State Gov. Babjide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts and Culture, commended the residents on efforts to clean the environment.
“What I have seen here today is commendable; we have a beautiful community with responsible citizens who have also joined with the government to see how they can, clean our environment.
“Every responsible citizen needs to take their communities; for me, tourism thrives in a cleaner environment and that is what I want in Lekki.
“Lekki is one major place, and that is why we are looking at it from the angle of tourism, arts and cultural ministry, to see how we can promote a cleaner environment in our tourist cities and communities, “ Aregbe said.
The special adviser urged residents to imbibe the habit of cleaning the environment regularly and not only on the last Saturday of the month set aside by the government.
“It is just a clarion call to citizens that Lagos deserves better and Lagos is really not dirty. It is some of our people that are dirty, “ he said.
NAN reports that many residents in Lekki Phase One complied with the state government’s directive on the re-introduction of the monthly environmental sanitation.
Officials of LERA ensured that residents embarked on a massive cleaning of a popular canal in the area.
