The Senate has passed constitutional amendments to establish State Police in Nigeria after lawmakers approved the bill on Wednesday following a clause-by-clause review of its provisions.
The lawmakers changed to manual voting after the electronic voting device developed technical issues during plenary.
The move aimed to ensure that no senator lost the chance to vote on the proposed legislation.
Under the manual voting system, each senator stood up, announced their name, and openly stated their position on the State Police Bill.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio presided over the session.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier sent the Constitution Amendment Bill to the Senate to create a legal framework for State Police.
The bill seeks to amend relevant parts of the 1999 Constitution and allow states to establish their own police structures.
Recall, the proposal follows repeated calls for constitutional reforms that would allow states to take a bigger role in securing their territories. The move is part of broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.
