The Igbo Youth Leaders and Stakeholders Assembly has dismissed as false a statement circulating on social media alleging that the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Sen. John Mbata, called on Igbo men to take up arms in response to insecurity in the South-East.

The group, in a statement signed by its leader, Mazi Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu, described the report as fake news and urged the public to disregard it.

According to the assembly, Mbata, as leader of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, did not and could not have issued any call encouraging violence or armed mobilisation.

The group condemned what it termed malicious propaganda aimed at blackmailing the Ohanaeze leader and misleading the public, urging citizens to verify sensitive information before sharing it.

It further called on relevant security agencies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police and the Department of State Services, to investigate the origin of the alleged statement and bring those responsible to justice.

The assembly noted that insecurity remains a major concern in the South-East and stressed that misinformation could worsen tensions in the region.

While acknowledging efforts by political leaders and security agencies to improve safety, the group advocated political dialogue and non-violent approaches in addressing the country’s security challenges.

It also commended ongoing development initiatives in the region and urged relevant authorities to work closely with state governments and stakeholders to ensure improved security and sustainable development.
