LAWMA has sealed premises along Ago Palace Way over persistent illegal waste dumping and arrested 11 people for unauthorised waste disposal across Lagos Island.
LAWMA Steps Up Waste Enforcement
However, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the operations showed the Authority’s resolve to enforce waste management rules across Lagos.
Meanwhile, the Ago Palace Way operation covered plazas, hotels, lounges and warehouses along the corridor. LAWMA targeted activities linked to waste build-up and environmental nuisance on road setbacks, medians and other unauthorised public spaces.
11 Arrested On Lagos Island
Furthermore, the enforcement operation covered Tinubu, Apongbon, Oke-Arin and CMC areas on Lagos Island. Officers arrested 11 people for unauthorised waste handling and illegal disposal.
The arrested persons are Shabban Tasiu, 20, Nkechukwu Nwokeji, 40, Kolawole Elija, 28, Sunni Sado, 30, Subairu Lawal, 28, Abi Lawal, 22, Sufianu Musa, 20, Yusuf Lawan, 18, Ahmed Lawal, 25, St. Peter Eze, 23, and Udo Richard, 32.
Consequently, Gbadegesin warned that indiscriminate waste disposal harms the environment and could undermine sanitation gains across the state. He urged residents, traders and businesses to stop dumping waste on roads, walkways, drains and other unauthorised locations.
LAWMA Warns Residents, Businesses
In response, he advised residents to bag waste properly and hand it to accredited Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators. He also said businesses and property owners must take responsibility for waste generated within and around their premises.
Furthermore, Gbadegesin said the operation forms part of LAWMA’s wider plan to improve environmental cleanliness, tackle violations at source and promote responsible waste management.
Meanwhile, he said the Authority would continue to monitor different parts of Lagos and take action against people and businesses that violate environmental regulations.
Authority Seeks Public Support
However, Gbadegesin said enforcement aims beyond arresting offenders. He said LAWMA wants to improve compliance and encourage lasting changes in public attitudes towards waste management.
In response, he urged residents, traders, businesses and property owners to follow environmental rules, use approved waste disposal channels and support efforts to keep public spaces clean, accessible and safe.
Furthermore, he asked residents to report illegal dumping and other waste violations through LAWMA’s established channels. He stressed that a cleaner Lagos requires the shared responsibility of government, residents, businesses and other stakeholders.
