
On 22 August, renowned journalist and seasoned communications expert Olumuyiwa Akintunde took office as President of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism Alumni Association in Lagos.
He now leads a seven-member leadership team comprising Vice President Isabella Omwen Adesola, General Secretary Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji, and Assistant Secretary Chika Nnamani.
The team also comprises Publicity Secretary Mark Akhuetie, Organising Secretary Pelumi Oluwayomi, and Legal Adviser Adegbemi Adewale.
The NIJ Alumni Association looks forward to Mr Akintunde implementing his six-point agenda.
The lead point is Reconnection and Unity: One NIJ, One Voice, which includes a global membership database, pan-Nigerian and diaspora chapters, and quarterly town halls.
Elements of the Akintunde plan include professional advancement and industry leadership; members’ welfare and opportunities; Give Back to NIJ: Alma Mater First; strong governance and transparency; and a brand and legacy project.
About Muyiwa Akintunde
Muyiwa Akintunde is a veteran Nigerian journalist, public relations consultant, and publisher. He is an alumnus of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), having graduated from the full-time Diploma in Journalism Class of 1986. He chaired the NIJ ’86 Class Executive Committee.
Akintunde began as a freelance reporter and later worked at The Guardian. He held editorial roles at TimesWeek (a Daily Times publication), The Post Express, Newswatch, and Theweek, and served as Managing Editor (West Africa) for the UK-based Africa Today.
Around 2004, he moved into public relations, joining C&F Porter Novelli (then Corporate and Financials) as Group Head, Media. He later served as Executive Director at MarketingMix and as Chief Operating Officer at TPT International.
He is now the Lead Consultant/CEO of Leap Communications Limited and the Publisher of Breezy News (breezynewsnigeria.com), an online platform that emphasises ethical journalism.
He has been active in the Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria (PRCAN), previously serving as Vice President and contributing to its Masterclass series. He was also President of the Rotary Club of Ikeja-Alausa Central during the 2024–25 Rotary year and authored a commemorative book on lawyer and social justice advocate Dr Tunji Braithwaite, launched in May 2026.
About the Nigerian Institute of Journalism

The Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) is Nigeria’s foremost monotechnic dedicated to journalism and mass communication training. It is located at 8–14 Ijaiye Road, Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos.
The International Press Institute (IPI) founded it in 1963, and it became fully operational in 1971. The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) accredits it, and its full institutional accreditation is valid until 2030.
Programmes
- National Diploma (ND) in Mass Communication — 2 years full-time (or 3 years part-time). Admission via JAMB UTME.
- Higher National Diploma (HND) — now offered in specialised streams (Journalism & Media Studies, Strategic Communication). Requires an ND with at least Lower Credit and a one-year industrial attachment.
- Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Print/Broadcast Journalism or Public Relations & Advertising (1 year full-time).
- Short-term professional courses: Photojournalism, News Writing & Reporting, Editing, Radio/TV Production, etc.
