Union Bank of Nigeria has strengthened its environmental campaign after its employees removed more than 200 kilograms of waste during a beach cleanup at Alpha Community Beach in Lekki, Lagos.

Union Bank rallies volunteers for cleaner coastlines
The bank organised the cleanup with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) on July 3, 2026, as part of its 2026 Employee Volunteer Day.

The exercise formed part of UnionCares, the bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.

Nigeria generates about 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste every year. Lagos alone accounts for about 870,000 tonnes. More than 88 per cent of the waste is not recycled. Much of it ends up in rivers, lagoons and the ocean, threatening marine life and coastal communities.

Furthermore, the cleanup supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12) and Life Below Water (SDG 14). It also promotes stronger partnerships under SDG 17.

Volunteers remove over 200kg of waste

Meanwhile, more than 50 Union Bank employees joined officials of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation and students of Rodan High School, Ajah, for the exercise.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) also provided logistics and ensured workers sorted and disposed of the waste properly.
Volunteers worked in eight groups and collected more than 200 kilograms of waste. Organisers weighed the waste after the exercise to measure the environmental impact.

Consequently, Union Bank’s Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, Mrs Olufunmilola Aluko, said protecting the environment requires everyone to play a role.

“At Union Bank, we understand that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility, and we are committed to playing our part. As the impact of climate change becomes more evident, initiatives like this allow our employees to take meaningful action, support cleaner communities, and contribute to a more sustainable future.”

Bank pledges continued environmental action

In response, Union Bank said it will continue to build partnerships and support community projects that promote environmental protection and sustainable development across Nigeria.
