Abia State Government has banned commercial motorcycle operations in Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia, with enforcement set to begin on June 22, 2026.
Otti Orders Okada Ban Across Three Cities
However, the Abia State Government approved a full restriction on commercial motorcycles, known as Okada, within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia. Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, signed off on the directive.
Meanwhile, the policy takes effect from Monday, June 22, 2026. Authorities directed all operators to stop operations within the affected urban centres before the deadline.
Security and Traffic Concerns Drive Decision
Furthermore, the government said the ban targets improved security, safer roads and better traffic management. Officials also said the policy will support a more organized transport system in major cities.
Consequently, the state linked the decision to ongoing concerns around unregulated motorcycle activities in urban areas. The government said it wants to reduce risks and improve public order.
Enforcement Begins With Arrests and Seizures
However, the government ordered security agencies and enforcement bodies to ensure full compliance. Officials warned that violators after the start date will face arrest.
Meanwhile, authorities also directed that motorcycles used in violation will face confiscation under existing laws. The government stressed strict enforcement across all three cities.
Thousands of Operators Affected
Furthermore, the ban affects thousands of commercial motorcycle riders who depend on daily operations for income. The policy marks a major shift in Abia’s transport system.
Consequently, officials urged residents, transport unions and community leaders to support implementation. They said cooperation will help ensure a smooth transition.
Meanwhile, the government said the directive aims to improve safety, security and overall transport quality in the state. It also called on all stakeholders to comply before the enforcement date.
