Tension rose across the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress after the party suddenly delayed its House of Representatives primary election over what officials described as logistical challenges.
The crisis started on Saturday after the APC Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, released a statement announcing a shift in the commencement time for the primary election.
In the statement dated May 16, 2026, Aguoru asked aspirants, delegates, party officials, and supporters to remain on standby pending further instructions from the party leadership.
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience that may arise as a result of this slight adjustment in time,” the statement read.
However, the announcement quickly triggered confusion within political circles and on social media. Reports soon emerged claiming that sensitive materials meant for the primary election had allegedly been snatched under unclear circumstances.
Confusion Deepens Among Delegates
As of press time, APC officials had neither confirmed nor denied the reports surrounding the alleged disappearance of the election materials.
Consequently, uncertainty spread among party members and supporters across several constituencies in the state, especially in areas with fiercely contested House of Representatives races.
Some party faithful who spoke anonymously urged the leadership to ensure transparency and fairness throughout the exercise.
“There is already confusion everywhere. People are worried because nobody seems to know exactly what is happening,” one delegate said.
Meanwhile, another supporter called on security agencies and electoral officials attached to the exercise to act quickly and restore confidence among stakeholders.
Concerns Over Credibility of Exercise
Despite the growing rumours, no security agency had released an official statement on the alleged snatching of election materials at the time this report was filed.
Furthermore, it remains unclear whether the logistical challenges cited by the APC directly connect to the circulating allegations.
Political observers warned that prolonged uncertainty could damage the credibility and smooth conduct of the APC primary election if party leaders fail to provide urgent clarification.
Delegates, aspirants, and party members now await fresh communication from the APC leadership on when the primary election will officially begin.
