The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has launched a sports medicine seminar in Benin City to equip female medical professionals with skills to improve the health and performance of female athletes.

The seminar, supported by Olympic Solidarity, is themed: “Fueling the Female Champion: Understanding the Female Athlete Triad and RED-S in the Adolescent Athlete.”

The programme runs from June 21 to June 24, 2026, at the Media Centre, Binos Hotel and Suites, Benin City, Edo State.

It brings together female medical professionals from Nigeria’s South-South and South-East regions.

According to Tony Nezianya, NOC’S Public Relations Officer, during the opening ceremony, NOC President, Engr. Habu Gumel, is expected to describe the seminar as a landmark programme and the first initiative organised by the committee specifically for female medics.

Also, Gumel, will stress the need to improve knowledge of key health challenges affecting female athletes, especially adolescents.

The President of the Nigerian Olympic Committee (PNOC) praised the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Olympic Solidarity for supporting the programme.

He said the initiative reflects a strong commitment to athlete welfare, sports medicine education, and women’s empowerment in sports.

He explained that the NOC selected participants from the South-South and South-East regions to ensure broader coverage.

He added that the committee plans to extend similar programmes to other parts of the country in the future.

The seminar focuses on improving understanding of the Female Athlete Triad and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S).

These conditions affect the nutrition, growth, health, and performance of adolescent female athletes.

Organisers urged participants to take an active part in the sessions and use the opportunity to gain practical knowledge that can improve athlete care in their communities and sporting environments.

In response to growing concerns about athlete welfare, the Nigerian Olympic Committee reaffirmed its commitment to promoting athlete health through education, capacity building, and collaborative sports medicine programmes across Nigeria.
