Peter Obi has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to stop pursuing social media activists and concentrate on major corruption cases that affect Nigeria’s economy.
The Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) reacted to the EFCC’s invitation of Randy Peter and Mama Pee. He spoke through the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR).
Obi urged the anti-graft agency to focus on major financial crimes instead.
POMR spokesperson Idris Zekeri signed the statement on Thursday. He said the EFCC remains a key institution in Nigeria’s fight against corruption.
He added that the agency should direct its resources towards alleged financial mismanagement, diversion of public funds and other economic crimes.
The group said corruption continues to slow economic growth, weaken infrastructure and reduce public trust. It urged the EFCC to make high-profile corruption cases its top priority.
POMR said, “Over the past years, we have seen an increasing trend where social media commentators, political activists and online critics are repeatedly summoned, interrogated or detained over relatively minor or highly debatable infractions.”
The group argued that while every citizen must obey the law, the EFCC should consider whether spending major resources on online disputes fits its core mandate.
It warned that too much attention on social media cases could damage public confidence in the commission.
The statement said, “When citizens perceive the agency as a tool for stifling political dissent or managing public relations, that vital trust is eroded.”
It urged the EFCC leadership to deploy its investigators and legal teams to tackle high-profile financial crimes, public sector corruption and other economic challenges.
It also asked the commission to stay out of political or social disputes and remain focused on fighting corruption.
