Suspected terrorists attacked commuters on the Magami-Dansadau road in Zamfara State, killing several travellers, abducting others, and worsening fears over one of the state’s deadliest routes.
Gunmen Ambush Escorted Convoy
A resident of Magami told Channels Television that the attack happened on Sunday between 4pm and 5pm.
According to the source, armed men opened fire on vehicles travelling under security escort toward Dansadau.
Furthermore, commuters had reportedly waited for about seven hours before security operatives arrived to lead them through the dangerous road.
Meanwhile, the convoy came under attack near Dogosatsin village.
Security Operatives, Civilians Killed
The source said the attackers targeted the operational vehicle of security forces escorting the travellers.
Consequently, the assault reportedly killed security agents, civilians, and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF.
He added that rescuers had recovered 10 bodies so far, while search efforts continued for more victims.
Furthermore, several injured persons were taken to Magami General Hospital.
The resident said doctors later planned to move the wounded to Gusau for advanced treatment.
However, the transfer had not happened because no security escort was available at the time.
He also alleged that the attackers abducted an unspecified number of passengers heading to nearby villages.
Meanwhile, troops reportedly pursued the gunmen into the bush, which helped reduce further casualties.
Police Confirm Incident
In response, Zamfara Police Command spokesperson Yazid Abubakar confirmed awareness of the attack.
However, he said authorities were still verifying casualty figures as of the time of filing this report.
The Gusau-Magami-Dansadau road remains one of the most dangerous routes in Zamfara State.
Residents often depend on armed escorts before travelling to Gusau because of repeated kidnappings and deadly ambushes.
Furthermore, Governor Dauda Lawal last year visited Dansadau and flagged off construction of the 108-kilometre road to improve movement and security.
