The Southern Kaduna Lawyers’ Forum (SKLF) has called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the mysterious death of Miss Mary Habila, who reportedly died at the residence of Minister of Works David Umahi in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State on June 27, 2026.

This was contained in a statement by Dr. Solomon Musa and Solomon G. Yo Hannah Esq, Chairman SKLF and Publicity Secretary SKLF respectively.

The forum said it received the news with deep shock and expressed condolences to the family of Mary Habila. It said no family should lose a daughter under such unclear circumstances. The lawyers added that conflicting reports about her death have increased public concern.

SKLF said investigators should follow both Nigerian law and international medical standards. The forum cited Sections 14 and 33 of the 1999 Constitution, saying every Nigerian deserves protection and justice.

The lawyers demanded a thorough, impartial and public investigation. They also urged authorities to conduct a valid autopsy or coroner’s inquest before any burial takes place.

According to the forum, delaying the funeral will help preserve evidence and strengthen public confidence in the investigation.

SKLF asked investigators to answer key questions. These include why Mary was at Umahi’s residence, when she died, when authorities reported her death, the condition of her body, and who was present in the house that day.

The forum also asked where David Umahi was on the date of her death. It questioned whether Mary died on June 27 but authorities disclosed the incident to the public on July 10. The lawyers also sought clarity on whether she worked as a nurse or physiotherapist, when she travelled to Ebonyi State, and the circumstances of her employment and deployment to the minister’s residence.

SKLF said answers to those questions would reassure Mary’s family, Southern Kaduna people and the wider public. The forum stressed that no individual, regardless of office or status, stands above the law. It also urged everyone with useful information to cooperate fully with investigators and called for the publication of the investigation report.
However, the lawyers appealed to their members and the public to remain calm while authorities complete their work. They also urged the media and other stakeholders to avoid speculation and respect the dignity of the deceased and her grieving family.

SKLF said it stands ready to provide legal support and monitor the process to ensure justice is done and seen to be done. The forum added that it may begin legal proceedings if necessary to protect the family’s right to truth and justice.

The lawyers reaffirmed that the right to life remains protected under Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution. They urged authorities to act quickly and transparently to determine the cause of Mary Habila’s death and restore public confidence.
