Tinubu appointed as new Chairman of ECOWAS

Bissau (Guinea-Bissau), July 9, 2022 – President Bola Tinubu has been appointed the new Chairman of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

His appointment took place at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government on Sunday in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.

Tinubu is attending the meeting of the ECOWAS leaders for the first time.

He took over from President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau.

Tinubu, in his inaugural address, promised to work closely with member states, regional institutions, and international partners to implement initiatives aimed at promoting economic growth, regional trade integration, and social development.

He said there was the need to protect the democratic culture in the sub-region.

“We will need take democracy more seriously. Democracy is very tough, but it is the best form of government,” he said.

The Nigeria leader also promised to run inclusive administration of the regional body.
