The National Pension Commission, PenCom, has launched a free healthcare programme for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme, targeting pensioners who earn below N70,000 monthly.
PenCom Opens Registration for PenCare
PenCom introduced the healthcare initiative under a programme called PenCare. The scheme aims to improve healthcare access for elderly Nigerians and reduce medical costs for retirees struggling with low pensions.
In a statement, the Commission said the pilot phase targets retirees who are at least 60 years old and receive monthly pensions of not more than N70,000 through their Pension Fund Administrators, PFAs.
Meanwhile, PenCom confirmed that registration for the programme has started. The Commission added that only 30,000 eligible pensioners would benefit in the first phase under a first-come, first-served arrangement.
How Eligible Pensioners Can Apply
According to PenCom, interested retirees can register by scanning the barcode published in national newspapers.
Furthermore, pensioners can also apply through the Commission’s official website and the websites of participating PFAs.
PenCom explained that the PenCare initiative forms part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, programme aimed at protecting the dignity, health, and welfare of pensioners across Nigeria.
PenCom Targets Better Welfare for Retirees
Consequently, the pension regulator said the programme reflects its commitment to improving retirees’ welfare through better healthcare access and stronger financial security after retirement.
The Commission also noted that many pensioners face serious healthcare challenges because of limited income and rising medical costs.
In response, PenCom reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising the needs of retirees nationwide through targeted support programmes.
