New pumps

The Lagos State Government has started installing new pumps at the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations to boost water production and improve access to safe drinking water across the state.

The project forms part of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s wider investment in water infrastructure aimed at meeting the needs of Lagos, Africa’s fastest-growing megacity.

The Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) said the installation is part of the rehabilitation of the Iju Headworks and Akute Intake Stations under Lots 1, 2 and 3.

The upgrade will modernise key facilities, improve efficiency, increase water production and expand access to potable water.

The work falls under LWC’s eight-month rehabilitation programme for the Iju and Adiyan Water Treatment Plants.

The Lagos State Government is funding the project, which runs from February 2026 to October 2026.

LWC Targets Higher Water Production
Meanwhile, at the project kick-off meeting held earlier this year at LWC headquarters in Ijora, the Managing Director, Engr. Mukhtaar Tijani, described the rehabilitation as a major step in strengthening public water supply in Lagos.

According to Tijani, the project focuses on replacing and upgrading critical pumping systems and related infrastructure.

He said the intervention aligns with LWC’s Strategic Business Plan and the state government’s goal of delivering world-class water services.

Tijani urged contractors and stakeholders to ensure timely delivery. He said the corporation would execute the project using high engineering and quality standards.

“This project must not be business as usual. We want all hands on deck to ensure timely and successful delivery. Let this dream become a reality,” Tijani said.

LWC expects the project to improve the performance of the Iju Headworks and Akute Water Intake Stations.

The corporation said the upgrade will raise water production, reduce operational downtime and strengthen service delivery.

The project will expand access to safe and reliable water supply for millions of Lagos residents. LWC also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Lagos State Government’s development agenda through sustained investment in critical water infrastructure.
